What exactly is Christian courting?

Last night I asked out this girl in my youth group and she told me she only does courtship. The youth group is at an evangelical church. I was raised Catholic and was just recently saved, so I'm new to all this. Can someone please tell me how Christian courtship works? Is it like an engagement? I really like this girl but I'm not ready to get married yet. I'm willing to court for at least a year before that but I want to get to know her more first.
