Why is it when a celebrity such as Heath ledger dies thats when he gets recognition.?

I am an extreme fan of him and have followed his brillant career. It just pisses me off when someone dies that he gets nominated for an Oscar. We should appreciate the actor when he is alive and give him support and most of all RESPECT!!
